Crown Thinning Services

Increase light penetration and air movement through the crown of the tree

What is crown thinning and why is it important?

Crown thinning is the selective removal of tree branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown of the tree. It can also remove dead and diseased branches for safety reasons. This is completed in such a way that it produces a balanced canopy shape and does not change the shape or size of the tree. Here at DH trees, we offer specialist tree thinning and crown thinning services to residential and commercial customers throughout Surrey.

Our arborists have a wealth of experience looking after all different types of trees and by pruning them, you can boost the health of the tree, keep the people and property around it safe, and influence the way it grows. We can complete all types of tree pruning, including crown reduction, thinning, and lifting, and we are here to advise you about the best forms of pruning for your trees.

Which trees require crown thinning?

Crown thinning is applied mainly to broad-leaved tree species and also fruit trees. The effect is more subtle than crown reduction and normally will remove no more than 30 per cent of the crown.

Crown thinning can often be the preferred method of tree pruning to minimise storm damage. It will always allow the tree to achieve its natural growth cycle and is a great way of boosting your tree’s health. Trees that have been thinned will produce more flowers and fruits.

Our tree surgeons will always consider the species of the tree to ascertain whether it is suitable for thinning before offering advice, giving a quote, and carrying out the work. If any work that we do needs permission because of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), we can contact the relevant authorities and make these applications.

What are the reasons for crown thinning or tree thinning?

There are several reasons that trees need to be thinned.

  • To improve the light levels passing through the tree canopy, to reduce shade
  • Allows removal of dead, diseased or weak limbs or branches that are crossing or rubbing reducing the risk of damage to property or people from unexpected falling branches and to improve tree health
  • To reduce the sail effect, so the wind can move more freely through the branches, reducing the risk of the tree being blown over in a storm
  • Reduces the weight of the tree
