Do you want a tree removed from your garden or premises? Some trees just need general maintenance and pruning to get them under control, while others require a complete removal. Either way, there will be tree waste created, consisting of anything from leaves and twigs to full branches and trunks. As arborists, we always try to repurpose tree waste to ensure these natural resources are reused or recycled.
Here are some of the ways tree materials are used elsewhere.
How to avoid trees going to landfill
As tree surgeons, we’re passionate about sustainable tree waste management with the aim of avoiding sending any of it to landfill. Tree materials are a fantastic natural resource that can be repurposed in a variety of ways. Homeowners and businesses may want to implement some of these processes themselves, but if not, check with your tree surgeon about how they can help, including seasoned logs and wood chipping services.
Seasoned logs and firewood
One of the most popular ways to use tree waste is by turning larger branches and tree trunks into seasoned logs. After tree felling, larger sections of wood can be split down into small logs and left to season. This is where wood is dried out, removing the moisture content until the logs are ready for burning. Firewood is used anywhere from wood-burning stoves and fire pits to indoor fireplaces, and seasoned logs burn more efficiently than freshly cut wood.
Wood chippings and mulch
One of the great byproducts of tree waste is wood chippings. This is where branches and twigs are fed into large wood chipping machines to create uniform wood chips. The chippings have multiple applications in gardening and landscaping. This includes mulch for flower beds, trees and shrubs, as the chips help the soil to retain moisture, prevent weeds and improve the earth’s fertility when they break down over time. Wood chippings can also be used to create beautiful paths or cover other areas where you don’t want soil on display.
Composting
Tree waste like leaves and twigs can be great for composting, creating a nutrient-rich mixture. Once broken down into compost, it can be used to enrich garden soil to improve its fertility and composition, returning valuable nutrients to your garden to promote the healthy growth of shrubs, trees, grass and flowers. Some waste recycling centres will also compost garden waste and use it as a soil improver on farmland to aid crop growth.
Recycling tree waste
In some locations, tree waste recycling is available. This is where wood from trees is recycled into other products, such as furniture or paper. Some companies even ask for tree wood donations if they make products and handcrafted items from the waste products. This is a fantastic way to ensure no part of the tree is wasted.
