Ash Tree Reduction 4
Published On: January 8, 2024

Our client got in touch because they were concerned about the branches of their ash tree overhanging the shed. Ash trees are tall and elegant and can form a large domed canopy, and this canopy had grown too large.

When our client made contact, our experienced tree surgeons went to their home, completed a free site survey, and advised them on the best next steps, which involved a combination of crown reduction and crown lifting.

A crown or tree reduction involves making the crown of a tree smaller and is one of the most common tree pruning techniques. The limbs on the uppermost part of the canopy are cut back at pruning points. There are many benefits to this type of tree pruning, including the fact that it removes dead branches. However, these can be dangerous for your tree, and in this case, in a storm, they could damage the shed or cause injury to the homeowner when they are in the garden.

Crown reduction will lead to increased sunlight through the tree, which can benefit surrounding properties. It is essential to use proper tree pruning methods because these will always improve any home’s kerb appeal and will enhance the look of a back garden.

This project also involved crown lifting, where the lower branches of the crown are removed. This was done to provide space above the shed and not obstruct access. As with crown reduction, this does not alter the appearance of the tree and will always preserve the nature of the garden and space.

The Results

Our experienced arborists reduced the tree’s crown by 30 per cent and also lifted the crown from the shed roof. Crown reduction cut back the number of branches, and crown lifting created a clearer and brighter space above the shed’s roof. The client was really happy with the results.

It is always important to use a professional arborist for all types of tree pruning. A tree badly reduced will not look good, and it will be detrimental to the tree’s health. In the worst cases, it could end up being damaged so severely that the tree will need to be removed, which is an expensive process.

Any challenges?

The ash tree was very tall, so our arborists used special techniques to carefully lower the branches to the ground to ensure that the roof and any surrounding shrubs or fencing were not damaged.
