East Surrey Oak Felling (28)
Published On: May 1, 2024

Back in August last year, East Surrey Hospital got in touch with DH Tree Services to ask about our tree felling. They were worried about a large oak tree which was growing in close proximity to a few buildings on their site. We went out to their premises to assess the situation and recommended a complete tree removal.

At DH Tree Services, we believe in saving trees whenever possible. However, tree felling is sometimes the only option if the branches, canopy, trunk or roots are causing major safety issues. If trees start to become too large, they can affect building safety, which is especially concerning at a site like a hospital.

There are two types of tree felling. Straight felling is the quickest, but this requires a clear space around the tree. Therefore, this project would require section tree felling. This is where the tree is removed one section at a time in stages. It’s often the safest option, especially in tighter spaces. The client also requested a full tree stump removal rather than leaving it in situ, meaning the space could be used for something else.

After our team performed a thorough site survey, we secured the area. The large oak tree was felled using a timber grab, ensuring ropes were set in place for safety while moving and lowering the limbs. Each section of the tree was carefully removed section by section, and we also climbed the tree to use chainsaws on the easier limbs.

The Results

As you can see from the tree removal images, our team did an excellent job at safely cutting down this overgrown oak tree. Once the trunk was cut down to a suitable size, we used a stump grinder to grind out the stump to 6 to 9 inches below ground level.

Any challenges?

Our main challenge was to complete a safe tree removal. We achieved this by ensuring the team worked together using clear communication and with all the correct equipment provided.
