Beech Tree In Chaldon 5
Published On: January 4, 2024

Most trees will require maintenance to ensure they don’t become too overgrown and remain in a healthy condition. However, while most work can take place if the homeowner gives permission, some trees have a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) applied. In these cases, you may need permission from your local authority before any work can begin.

For this next project, we were contacted by a homeowner in Chaldon, Surrey about a large overhanging beech tree.

The Project: Crown Reduction & Reshaping a Beech Tree with a TPO

In January 2021, we were called out to look at a large beech tree causing our client concern. It was overhanging in her rear garden, so needed some tree maintenance work completing to reduce its crown.

We checked whether there was an existing TPO, confirming there was one in place for this tree. Therefore, we applied to the customer’s local council, completing a planning application to carry out the necessary work. Luckily, the application was accepted, so we could go ahead.

We informed our client of the good news, booking in the proposed work as soon as possible.

The Results

As you can see from the images, on the day, our team arrived and carried out the work to a high standard, reducing and reshaping the crown by 2.5 metres all around. This will help retain a healthy canopy, thinning it by 20% to allow more light to come into the client’s garden. By reducing the crown all over, it also lifted the canopy by 5 metres from ground level.

We ensured a smooth and safe process throughout, especially as the client had Astroturf on their lawn. Therefore, we placed boarding underneath the tree and around our work area to prevent any damage being caused as we carefully lowered any cut branches.

After job completion, as always, we ensured a perfect tidy up, leaving the space clear of any debris.
