Tree Surgeon Jobs

A tree surgeon is usually a self-employed contractor who either fells or prunes a tree in a surgical manner, avoiding damage to the surrounding environment or other limbs of the existing tree – hence the term ‘surgeon’.

For qualified tree surgeons and their team, no two days are the same. They might be working on a small, residential job one day before moving to a large-scale site clearance the following day.

There are lots of aspects involved in the average day for a tree surgeon, which include preparing gear, servicing machinery, ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public, maintaining the habitats of birds or wildlife, and. of course, making sure that the tree itself is treated with care.

Morning: How a tree surgeon prepares for the day ahead

What a tree surgeon does in the morning will depend on the job they have lined up that day. For example, they could be heading to a routine pruning job, a substantial tree felling or even dealing with an emergency caused by a storm-damaged tree.  However, there are some things that need to be done each day, such as:

  • Arriving at a yard to meet employees and collect equipment
  • Refuelling any equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, and leaf blowers
  • Checking other equipment, such as harnesses and spikes
  • Briefing the team on the day’s jobs
  • Providing the clients with an ETA
  • Arriving on site and putting any necessary safety measures in place, such as traffic control, pedestrian diversion routes, and barriers

Afternoon: What does a tree surgeon do?

Morning and early afternoon are usually when the bulk of the work is completed. This could involve climbing the tree and removing any diseased or damaged limbs and, in some cases, felling the entire tree where needed.
During this time, professional tree surgeons will also clean up the area and tackle any other issues that might arise, ensuring that they comply with relevant wildlife laws in the process. Once the job is complete, the tree surgeon and any team members will then have to safely pack away their gear and ensure that the area is left in the same standard as it was when they arrived.

Evening: Providing free quotes for tree work

In the late afternoon and early evening, a lot of tree surgeons use their time to complete any site visits and follow up leads on quotes to provide prices and book jobs in. They may also have to do some admin work, such as filing expenses and organising their diary, as well as prepare for the following day’s work.
